Celeb for a day

Today was the 15th annual Jeff Preston Celebrity Golf Tournament. Yea, I have a golf tournament named after me…it’s humbling, embarrassing, and brag-worthy all at the same time. For the third year in a row, the skies opened up and poured rain on the little community of Saugeen Shores the night before the tournament, only to treat us to near-perfect weather on the big day. Today wasn’t too hot, not very humid, and a nice breeze kept everything reasonable. I spent the day on the putting green, hanging out with Paralympian Josh Cassidy, Trish (my loving sister), Brenda (my god mother), and Mom. Not only did we officially leave the $1mil raised mark in the dust tonight, but this was also the very first year I’ve gone the entire day without a furious sun burn! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, I’ll figure it out 14 years later and do something about it…for serious.

Rotary presenting Jeff and John Davidson with $10,000 chequeThe highlight of this year’s tournament, as always, was meeting up with old friends who have been coming out to this tournament every year since it began. It was pretty funny to look at some of the old pictures from tournaments past and notice how gray my dad’s hair has become and how not-cute I have become. Another high point for me was hanging out with John Davidson (of Jesse’s Journey fame) and Dr. Craig Campbell (of “curing everything” fame). When all was said and done, the tournament raised $10,000 for the Jesse’s Journey Foundation and $15,000 to support Dr. Campbell’s research into finding a cure. All in all, it was a hugely successful day.

Rotary presenting Jeff and Craig Campbell a $15,000 donationI just wanted to take this chance to thank, repeatedly, the staff of Saugeen Golf Course for yet another amazing year, the Rotarians who volunteer every year and make this thing happen, the organizing committee who ensured this year was another success, Fred Wallace for MCing the event and relentlessly attacking former-Mayor Mark Kramer, former-Mayor Mark Kramer for being a good sport and a great Rotary president, Duncan Hawthorne and Bruce Power for all of their support, Buzz Hargrove and the CAW for always coming to my rescue, all of the sponsors for the Silent and Live Auction, all of the celebrities for taking time out of their busy lives to be a part of this tournament, and all of the golfers that take time off work to hit the links for a good cause.

With your help, we will stop Muscular Dystrophy from taking the lives of more great Canadians like Jesse Davidson.
